It’s MyPlate’s birthday! I want to celebrate by sharing my top 5 favorite tools you can find on www.MyPlate.gov.


  • The Shop Simple with MyPlate tool is a great resource for everyone working to eat healthy on a budget. This page allows you to explore budget friendly ingredients you can add to your grocery list today, as well as recipe for using those ingredients, and it can even help you find nearby farmer’s markets so you can eat well local!


  • The MyPlate Kitchen has healthy recipes for all life stages. You can tailor your recipe search by meal course, food group, specific nutrient, meal price tag, or even by what type of cooking equipment you plan to use. Interested in using your wok tonight and making a meal low in saturated fat? There’s a recipe for that.


  • The MyPlate Plan can give you an idea of how many servings of each food group you need in a day for your size and activity level. We need food from all five food groups to get the widest variety of nutrients each day. Complete the assessment to see how close you are to your best nutrition!


  • Once you know your plan, you can enter your food group goals into the Start Simple with MyPlate app! This app allows you to track servings of each food group so you can meet your goals each day. It also offers healthy eating tips and challenges so you can take your nutrition to the next level while making simple nutrition changes.

  • And my number 1 favorite tool at MyPlate is… THE PLATE! I use this image showing a healthy balance of food groups countless times in my real life and in my dietetic practice with clients. The plate can be used as a self-check tool to decide if your meal could be more nutritious by adding something from another food group. It is also a great way to show kids how to build a healthy meal!
